Comprehensive Prison Health Programs at 7 provincial prisons

Caritas is currently working at 7 prisons (Siem Reap, Kompong Thom, Preah Vihear, Kratie, Stung Treng, Mondolkiri and Rattanakiri) , setting up the health system at prisons in partnership with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Health, especially with CENAT for TB and NCHADS for HIV. In that health component, Caritas staffs work at prisons, with the health post staff, upgrading their skills through daily coaching and on-going trainings. Caritas in its effort to strengthen the referral system provides a secured room at each provincial hospital and a Tuk Tuk (local transport) transportation to facilitate the referrals to the hospital.

Caritas also supports the National Levels of MoH in their quarterly monitoring visits to ensure that the prisons work according to MoH standards...and get additional trainings if needed. Once the health component is well developed, Caritas moves its focus to vocational training to inmates to ensure that they get skilled and are well equipped to sustain themselves after their release... It is why Caritas is also supporting literacy classes, computer trainings, sewing and hair dressing skills. Vegetable gardening is also encouraged to provide home skills and improve the prisoners’ diet...with addition of organic vegetables in the daily meals.

All 7 prisons get all these health an vocational trainings support. Caritas collaborates more specifically with the Ministry of interior-General department of Prisons to ensure that full human development is an issue and that prisons become places of healing and recovery for a better future...
