Caritas Cambodia celebrated Khmer New Year with 5 provincial Prisons
On the Khmer New Year, on 10 to 14 April 2015, Caritas Cambodia celebrated the event with 2146 inmates of 5 provincial prisons such as Siem Reap, Kompong Thom, Preah Vihear, Kratie and Mondulkiri.
Caritas supported all food and ingredients to cook a delicious dish with curry chicken and bread for all inmates and people working at the prisons. The kitchen teams at the 2 prisons cooked all the food and prisoners gathered together in their respective building to share that great meal and dance together afterwards...
It was wonderful to see that for a few days, they could forget that they were living behind bars and could enjoyed themselves, sharing best wishes for a more happy and prosperous New Year! All dreams were alive in minds and spirits!
HIV and TB Launching Workshops at Siem Reap and Kompong Thom Prisons
Since 2007, the Caritas Cambodia Health Team in Siem Reap, is working at 5 provincial prisons (Siem Reap, KPT, PV, Kratie and Mondolkiri) setting up the health system with special focus on TB and HIV according to the new Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for HIV, STI, TB-HIV Prevention, Care, Treatment and Support in Prisons (Correction Centre) in Cambodia.
In order to implement better the New SOP, Caritas Cambodia requested NCHADS to assist with the implementation of HIV-STI and TB-HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment through trainings and monitoring visits, in cooperation with CENAT, the Provincial Health Departments (PHD) and the Prison Directors at Siem Reap and Kompong Thom prisons.
It is why, on 22nd and 24th October 2013, an Orientation HIV/AIDS Workshop on SOP (standard operating procedures) was launched with Caritas financial support at Siem Reap and Kompong Thom Prisons. These workshops have been conducted by NCHADS (National Center for HIV/AIDS and STIs) for Prison setting to Provincial Health department, Operational District, Referral Hospital, Provincial AIDS Department, Health Center in charge of the prison health post supervision, Prison Health Post staff and NGOs.
The SOP for Prison Setting intervention has been developed by a core group, approved and adopted by MOH (ministry of Health) and MOI (Ministry of Interior) since 2011
After these orientation workshops, NCHADS will conduct an in-depth training of 3 days for the prisons’ health post staff, cells leaders and security guards in order to implement that program. After the trainings, quarterly monitoring visits in cooperation with CENAT (The National TB program) and the Caritas Health Team will be conducted according to an agreed schedule. Achievements and progress will be closely monitored and recommendations drawn from the visits.
In total, 94 people have been trained on these issues, with 54 at Siem Reap prison and 55 at Kompong Thom prison. The 3 days training is scheduled for both prisons in November 2013.
Caritas staff is happy to support that program and give to all prisoners the right to health care and specifically the right for TB and HIV care and support!
