Caritas Cambodia Takes Part in the World Food Day

To promote food security rights , Caritas Cambodia joint with Action Aid, Oxfam, World Vision, CWS, Padek, Concern, Star Kampuchea and GAD/C to organize the World Food Day (WFD) under the topic “From Food Crisis to Stability” on October 13, 2011 in Phnom Penh.

Each organization organized food exhibition under the theme “Opportunity-Food-Life at Night market from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the same day. It is organized to raise awareness to the public on rights to food by improving household food viability, to call for investment to small scale producers to ensure their access equally to the distribution of economic growth and to create space for public dialog with policies makers to improve livelihood sustainability and promote food security rights of small scale producers, especially women.

WFD was presided over by H.E. Dr. Ing Kanthaphavi, Minister of Ministry of Women Affair and H.E. Dr. Chan Sarun, Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. It was opened the remarked by Ms. Ros Sophea, GADC’s executive director and Co-chaiperson of WFD committee. “WFD is providing opportunity to understand the challenge of women small producer group, and their big contribution in term of strength and time in food security,” said Ros Sophea, adding that “The government should think of infrastructure including market information to encourage and promote small scale farmers. Moreover, all men shall share women’s responsibility regarding family’s expense, food security, and family income.”
H.E. Dr. Ing Kanthaphavi said “Please all the small scale farmers try to learn and share experience about the good method to produce organic agricultural products, benefit of the using safe food, and food nutrition for healthy of the family.”
To begin with, Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture said the exhibition is very important because small scale farmers have chance to show their products to the public, NGOs, and government and to call for the investment to small scale producers to ensure its access equally distribution of economic growth. “The producers should have honesty in their business because quality and honesty of the producers are the key to the food safety,” he added.
Ms. Kov Sokim, farmer representative from Kratie province told that she hopes everyone would help supporting the farmers’ products…and hopefully, the food exhibition will be held every year to promote the small scale farmers’ products.”
