CCAMH Celebrates the “World Mental Health Day”

Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CCAMH) celebrated the Word Mental Health Day under the theme “The great Push: Investing in Mental Health” to promote understanding among the public on mental health problem. This celebration took place on October 10, 2011 at Chey Chumnas Hospital, Kandal province.

About 300 participants from school, community, provincial health and educational department, hospital and other NGO staff were invited to join this event. It was opened the remark from Dr. Kong Chhun Ly, chief of Chey Chumnas hospital and presided over by Mr. Moeun Rithy, representative of Caritas Cambodia, Dr. Kim Savuon, head of mental health office of hospital department of Ministry of Health, and Dr. Jor Vichet, deputy director of kandal provincial health office.

“I do hope that this Mental Health Day celebration will encourage everyone to promote more on mental health protection,” Dr. Kim Savuon said.Mr. Moeun Rithy raised that Caritas-CCAMH program will try to expand mental health service for Cambodian people because mental problem is serious in Cambodia.

There are only 48 doctors for 14 million of Cambodian people.Mental health service for child and adolescent has only in Chey Chumnas hospital called Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health which has been working since 1995.

Dr. Jor Vichet told “I really appreciate Caritas-CCAMH’s work. It actively participated in reducing mental health problem.”

According to the statistic of World Health Organization in 2002, there are 153 million people affected by depression which is a kind of mental health problem. Mental problem affects almost 12% of the total of around 450 million people all over the world.
