Caritas Cambodia Responses to the Needs of the People Suffered by Flood

Caritas Cambodia delivered aids to more than 1.000 of the most effected families in two districts of Stung Sen and Kampong Svay in Kg.Thom province on September 23, 2011. The organization is now working to find more supports to response the immediate, medium and long term needs of the suffered people in Kampong thom and in Preah Viher province.

A total of 148 people have reportedly died across Cambodia since the latest floods broke out on September 9, but more are believed to have died over the weekend and are not yet included in the official list. Of the official count, 52 were children, the Prime Minister said in a public address on Saturday, adding that 80,000 hectares of rice crops had been destroyed and 170,000 families displaced, Phnom Penh post reported today.

 

Caritas Cambodia’s humanitarian aids for each suffered family included 25kg of rice, one bottle of fish sauce, one bottle of soy sauce, 1kg of salt, 1kg of sugar, 1kg of soap, 1 piece of body soap, and 10 cans of canned fish.This delivering ceremony was presided over by H.E. Nhim Vannda , Senior Mininster, First Vice President of NCDM and Kampong Thom provincial governor, H.E. Chhon Chhoin. They thanked and appreciated Caritas Cambodia very much for its immediate response to reduce the difficulties of the victims."Caritas has worked in helping Cambodian people since 1990. Caritas Cambodia is a very important partner of the government in developing work. It works very fast to response any emergency cases. ”

“Caritas Cambodia provided the humanitarian assistants immediately to those people to reduce their difficulties, especially to deliver emergency needs such as foods,” said Mr. Sok Sakhan, Disaster Management Manager of Caritas Cambodia, adding that “Cambodian people have to take all possible precaution as the water levels keep rising.”
