The National and World Environment Day

Environment1 “Forest: Nature at Your Service” has been taken as the theme of The Nationla and World Environment Day (NWED) in Cambodia this year. The campaign was celebrated from 3-5 June 2011 in front of Wat Botum Vortei with the participation of Phnom Penh Municipality and civil society organizations, including Caritas Cambodia.

Three events was celebrated during the event, one of which is the meeting of approximately 1057people from different organizations to address climate change related to various issues such as biodiversity conservation, environmental resilience, etc. Education on environment had been raised to promote people’s understanding on environment and encourage them to voluntarily participate in environmental conservation and protection.

Second events is to promote agro-farming and environmentally friendly products, raise environmental understanding, and propagate sustainable productions and consumptions, 40 booths were opened from morning until late afternoon at Wat Botom Vortei Park. People who visited the exhibition said they will participate in environmental activities and start to be the client of environmentally friendly products.

In every evening of the campaign, art performances—third event-- was organized to make World and National Environment Day become more attractive and participating. Besides the orchestra that came to break down the silence of the night, the comedy performances were played to convey environmental messages to the public at large.

During this three-day campaign, the organization of NWED-2011 was conducted successfully as the publics and other partners suggested having such event again and being bigger by next year as Cambodia will host the ASEAN meeting. The campaign has achieved many major outputs and is enthusiastic by all partners and stakeholders.
The World and National Environment Day has been celebrated every year since the establishment of Environment Ministry in 1993 and it is one of major environmental campaign in the country besides “Clean Up the World Day” (Third week of September) and “National Clean-Up Day” (23rd November).
