Four delegates of Caritas Cambodia includes two indigenous farmers have been invited to join Southeast Asia Farmers’ Conference in the Philippines which will be held on 19-23 September, 2011. The forum is held in order to give the opportunity to farmers from Southeast Asian countries to share their knowledge and learn from each other under “Climate Resilient Eco-friendly Agriculture Mainstreaming (CREAM)” central program.

Two indigenous farmers from Caritas Cambodia-Mondulkiri are offered a glorious chance to join the conference as both of them are the key farmers having put great effort in doing agriculture in the community.

Srort Lory, 53, an indigenous farmer said the conference is a good prospect for him to gain knowledge of farming activities, animal raising, and other agricultural techniques.

“It is my first time joining such a great event like this and I’m so thankful to Caritas for offering me this rare chance. I do expect to share what I will be trained to the people in my community,” he added.

There will be activities such as Demonstration on sustainable agriculture practices as well as the exposure to the model farms in the event. Furthermore, all the participants will also participate in sharing session by doing presentation about sustainable agriculture program in their own countries. Workshop, group discussion, and exhibition will also be arranged in the conference.

Perng Deap, 28, a female key farmer of Caritas Cambodia-Mondulkiri smiled and told that she will take her agricultural products and the ethnic--Phnong-- clothes to exhibit in the conference. Moreover, she determined to make use of what she will learn from the event by applying it to her real farming.

Nay Vichheka, Planning Monitoring and Evaluation Manager of Caritas Cambodia, who is going to attend the conference with those farmers said based on her observation during the past two trips in the previous year, farmers have developed to be more noticeable in knowledge, participation, and communication after joining the meeting.

“They were very brave in the discussing. They expressed their idea confidently. One more thing, they have learnt the new technique to improve the outputs of their agricultural products,” said Vichheka, adding that “Though this year farmers are ethnic, I strongly believe that they can communicate well with the people there by using body language like what other farmers did in the previous year.”

Vichheka added that she plans to show a project in Battambang province called “Farmer and Researching Training” in the exhibition. Some seeds from all working office of Caritas Cambodia and the photos that are related to agriculture and climate change will be shown to participants in the forum as well.

Established in 1995, the farmer conference was organized to protect farmers and farmers’ rights in Asia. Southeast Asia Farmer Conference is very effective in promoting sustainable agriculture because many farmers in the region get wonderful opportunity to share their knowledge and learn from each other.
