Caritas Cambodia Provides 2nd Relief Distribution to The Typhoon Ketsana Affected Families
1394 families from Baray and Santuk district, Kampong Thom received humanitarian support from Caritas Cambodia and UN’ s World Food Program
Caritas Cambodia’s disaster management desk is continuing its 2nd relief distribution targeting 6285 families. The distribution covers 4 provinces, of Kampong Thom: 5688 families, from 1-4 December, Kampong Cham and Prey Veng: 489 families from 7-8 December and Preah Vihear is 108 families on 7th December 2009. The 2nd phase distribution will end on 11 December 2009 in Kampong Thom where 385 families will receive the humanitarian support. This 2nd distribution covers only food items for a period of 1 month to secure living until the harvesting season come early next year. Food support provided per family during the 2nd distribution covers the following items: Rice: 50 Kg, Fish sauce: 2 cans, Soy sauce: 2 cans, Sugar: 1 kg, Salt: 1 kg, Canned fish: 10 cans, Noodle: 1 case.
H.E. Nhim Vanda, the first Vice President of the National Committee for Disaster Management, who was presided over the distribution event in Kampong Thom on 4th December 2009, said the disaster including the Typhoon Ketsana is people’s enemy especially of the poor people and the most vulnerable group. He further said that people should be ready to prevent any possible disaster which could be happened by taking prevention activities within their own families and the community.
Addressing speech to the affected families, Mr. Kim Rattana, Executive Director of Caritas Cambodia mentioned that this support can only help people within a short time period, but this is a bridge to bring them a better living until their harvesting season.

Sharing with Caritas Cambodia’s distribution in Kampong Thom province, the UN World Food Program has provided 225.55 Tons of rice . The Cambodia country director of World Food Program said these food items would secure their basic need in particular the children, women, and the elderly who are the most vulnerable group.
This 2nd distribution was followed the 1st one including food and non-food items which was very essential to sustain their basic need especially for health care, prevention and sanitation.

However, it is not the advocacy activities and the relief distribution alone has been taken but rather a rehabilitation program has to be addressed in order to secure the daily living for their family member in particular for the future of the children, said executive director of Caritas Cambodia, Mr. Kim Rattana. The Rehabilitation program shall include:
Rebuilding houses
Reconstructing health center and health post
Restoring infrastructure and irrigation facilities
